TÜBİTAK Rail Transportation Technologies Institute (RUTE) was established in October 2019 at TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus based on the protocol signed between TÜBİTAK and TCDD with the aim of institutionalizing R&D cooperation.
With the vision of being a pioneer in the transformation of mobility, the Institute carries out R&D activities to develop innovative technologies that our country needs in the field of safer, faster and more efficient rail transportation technologies. For this purpose, the institute, in cooperation with TCDD, identifies current research topics in the field of rail transportation technologies and carries out research and development projects in which these technologies are designed nationally. The Institute also cooperates with international equivalent research institutions and coordinates technology transfer activities.
TÜBİTAK RUTE aims to serve as a reference center in our country by providing research, development and high quality engineering services required by public and private sector organizations in cooperation with universities and other institutions and organizations.

History
The history of R&D activities for rail transportation technologies within TÜBİTAK dates back to the vehicle and rail vehicle technologies projects at TÜBİTAK MAM Energy Institute. The successful projects on vehicle traction and control systems carried out at the Energy Institute in the early 2000s and the products put forward formed the background for the rail vehicle projects to be launched in the following years. Having gained experience in the field of vehicle technology, the expert research team has successfully developed traction and control system products for locomotives and light rail vehicles. In this context, effective cooperation has been realized with the main stakeholders of the sector, especially with subsidiaries such as TCDD and TÜLOMSAŞ, and the need has arisen to carry the existing cooperation further.
On 15.06.2019, in the final declaration of the TCDD-TUBITAK joint workshop, it was agreed between TCDD and TÜBİTAK to cooperate with an institutional structure for the national development of rail transportation technologies. Taking into account the 11th Development Plan's national needs and targets, the "Cooperation Protocol on Rail Transportation Technologies between the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey and the State Railways of the Republic of Turkey" was signed on September 21, 2019.
The protocol aims to "establish the Rail Transportation Technologies Institute (RUTE) within TÜBİTAK, which will carry out research, development and application projects related to these technologies, taking into account the aim of being a pioneer in the field of rail transportation technologies by following the developments in the world and ensuring the technological independence of our country in this sector".
Within the scope of realizing this goal, TÜBİTAK RUTE was established in TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus with the decision taken at the meeting of TÜBİTAK Board of Directors dated 12.10.2019 and numbered 13, and started its activities with the transfer of the existing expert team to the Institute.
