Established in October 2019 at the TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus based on the protocol signed for the institutionalization of R&D collaboration between TÜBİTAK and TCDD, the TÜBİTAK Rail Transportation Technologies Institute (RUTE) is dedicated to conducting R&D activities aimed at developing innovative technologies in the field of safer, faster, and more efficient rail transportation.

With a vision to lead the transformation of mobility, the institute collaborates with TCDD to identify current research topics in rail transportation technologies and executes research and development projects designed nationally for these technologies. Additionally, the institute engages in partnerships with international research institutions and coordinates technology transfer efforts.

TÜBİTAK RUTE aspires to serve as a reference center in our country by providing research, development, and high-quality engineering services needed by public and private sector organizations. The institute aims to collaborate with universities and other institutions, contributing to the advancement of the rail transportation field in Türkiye.

History

The history of R&D activities in rail transportation technologies within TÜBİTAK traces back to the projects on vehicle and rail vehicle technologies located at TÜBİTAK MAM Energy Institute. Successful projects and products in traction and control systems for vehicles, conducted in the early 2000s at the Energy Institute, laid the groundwork for future rail transportation projects. The expert research team, gaining experience in vehicle technology, successfully transferred its expertise to the field of rail transportation technologies, developing traction and control system products for locomotives and light rail vehicles. Effective collaboration with key stakeholders in the sector, including TCDD and TÜLOMSAŞ, was established, leading to the need for further advancement of existing collaborations.

In the final declaration of the TCDD-TÜBİTAK joint workshop on June 15, 2019, an agreement was reached between TCDD and TÜBİTAK to collaborate institutionally on the national development of rail transportation technologies. Considering the country's needs and goals outlined in the 11th Development Plan, a "Protocol on Cooperation for Rail Transportation Technologies Between the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey and the Republic of Turkey State Railways" was signed on September 21, 2019.

The protocol aims to establish the Rail Transportation Technologies Institute (RUTE) within TÜBİTAK with the goal of leading in rail transportation technologies, ensuring technological independence in this sector, and conducting research, development, and application projects related to these technologies.

To achieve this goal, TÜBİTAK RUTE was established at the TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus, and its activities began with the transfer of the existing expert team to the institute, as decided in the TÜBİTAK Board of Directors meeting on October 12, 2019 (Decision No: 13).
